Rare artwork by famed political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, creator of Santa Claus and the Republican elephant. This is a pencil rough of a cartoon published in the 3/23/1861 issue of the N.Y. Illustrated News which shows an angry southerner confronting lawmaker and newspaper editor Horace Greeley in a hotel lobby in Wash. D.C.. The caption reads, “A southerner giving Mr. Horace Greeley a bit of his mind.” This is an interesting piece of American history that powerfully captures the mood of impending Civil War. Signed by Thomas Nast and dated 1861.
